What Disciples Believe
As members of the Christian Church,
We confess that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the living God,
and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
Beliefs and practices usually associated with Disciples include:·
Open Communion. The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, is celebrated in weekly worship. It is
open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. ·
For I have received of the Lord what I have also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when He
was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body
that is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. In the same way He took the cup also after supper saying,
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. For as
often as you eat this bread, and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes."

Freedom of belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to exercise their faith by following their
consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer, and are expected to
extend that freedom to others. ·
"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." Ephesians 4:3 (NIV)
Baptism by immersion. Just as the baptism represents the death, burial and resurrection of
Jesus Christ, it symbolizes the death and burial of the old self of the repentant believer, and
the joyous birth of a brand new being in Christ.
"Peter said to them, 'Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins
may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'" Acts 2:38 (NRSV)
Belief in the oneness of the church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to
seek opportunities for common witness and service. "There is one body and one Spirit—just as you
were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of
all, who is over all and through all and in all." Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV)
The ministry of believers. Both ministers and lay persons, male and female, lead in
worship, service and spiritual growth.
"Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth,
slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ.
So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion,
kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline." Colossians 3:11-12 (The Message)
